Research & testing

Impression Testing

First impressions matter. Find out what users think in 5 seconds.

What is it?

Impression testing (or 5-second testing) shows users a design for a brief moment, then asks what they remember or understood. It measures whether a design communicates its purpose and key messages instantly, which is critical for landing pages and dashboards.

When to use it

Use impression testing for landing pages, homepage designs, marketing materials, or any screen where first impressions drive user decisions.

How to do it

1

Choose the design or screen to test and define what it should communicate.

2

Show participants the design for exactly 5 seconds.

3

Ask immediate recall questions: What was this page about? What stood out?

4

Collect responses from 20-30 participants for reliable patterns.

5

Compare recall patterns against your intended message hierarchy.

Pro tips
