How Might We
Reframe problems as opportunities. The right question unlocks the right solution.
What is it?
How Might We (HMW) is a reframing technique that turns insights, pain points, and observations into actionable design questions. By starting with 'How might we...', teams shift from problem-focused thinking to opportunity-focused ideation.
When to use it
Use HMW after user research synthesis, during affinity mapping, or at the start of ideation sessions. It bridges the gap between understanding problems and generating solutions.
How to do it
Review your research insights, pain points, or problem statements.
Reframe each insight as a question starting with 'How might we...'
Aim for questions that are broad enough to allow creative solutions but narrow enough to be actionable.
Cluster similar HMW questions and prioritize the most impactful ones.
Use the prioritized HMW questions as starting points for ideation and brainstorming.
Pro tips
If a HMW is too broad ('How might we make users happy?'), break it down. Too narrow ('How might we add a button?'), zoom out.
Write HMWs on sticky notes during research debrief โ capture them in real time.
